Items such as solvents, paint/stain/varnish, yard/garden products (including pesticides and herbicides), batteries, automotive products (including gasoline and oil), fluorescent light tubes, TVs, and computer monitors are considered hazardous waste.
To determine if something is hazardous, examine the label for one of the following signal words:
- Caution
- Danger
- Poison
- Warning
- Corrosive
- Flammable
- Explosive
- Oxidizer
- Irritant
- Environmental Hazard
If the item's label contains one or more signal words, it is hazardous waste and is accepted at the collection sites listed below. Do not throw hazardous waste in with your trash or recycling.
Collection of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
Collection Sites
Eight HHW collection sites are conveniently located around town for residents to properly manage their household hazardous waste. Residents may also take materials to the permanent collection facility at the Ada County Hidden Hollow Sanitary Landfill.
Ada County Permanent Collection Facility
Ada County residents may take household hazardous waste to the permanent collection facility located at the Hidden Hollow Landfill off Seaman's Gulch Road. The facility is open Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Call (208) 577-4736 for details.
Prohibited Materials
Explosives, ammunition, radioactive items, and biomedical waste are not accepted at hazardous waste collection sites. Call (208) 384-3901 or (208) 577-4736 for information on proper disposal of prohibited materials.
Needles, sharps, and syringes
