Compost Service

  • What size cart will I receive?

    The default size for your new compost cart will be the same size as your current trash cart.  If, however, you would like a different size cart, you can place your order online or by phone March 1-31.

  • If I am okay with the default cart size and service I will receive, do I need to do anything?

    You don't need to do anything! Your new compost cart will arrive this summer and you can begin using it immediately. 

  • When will my compost cart be collected?

    The compost cart will be collected weekly, the same day as your trash cart.

  • When will my new cart arrive?

    Cart delivery will begin citywide on June 1st.  You will receive a notification tag on your trash cart the week before your new compost cart arrives.  If you’ve made additional changes to your current cart configuration, those changes will be made at the same time your compost cart is delivered.

  • Will containers be offered for collecting kitchen scraps?

    Yes.  Customers will be able to purchase a kitchen pail for $7.50 to easily collect compostable materials in their kitchen and carry those materials to your cart.  The pails can be ordered online or by phone March 1-31.

  • What about Recycle the Fall?

    With the new compost collection program, you can set out unlimited amounts of leaves year round for weekly pickup.  Simply fill your compost cart first, then set out as many paper leaf bags as you need.

  • What if I already compost at home?

    A waiver will be available to home composters who agree to compost all applicable materials from their property. Eligible customers who agree to the waiver conditions will receive the $5 monthly participation rebate. Customers with a waiver however, will not receive a compost cart or any of the program benefits, such as curbside leaf collection.

  • Am I required to participate in this program?

    No.  Customers may decide to opt-out of the compost collection program.  However, customers who elect to opt-out will not receive the $5 monthly participation rebate and will pay a higher rate than if they participated in the program.  Additionally, customers who opt-out of the program will not receive any of the benefits of the program, such as fall leaf collection or Christmas tree collection.

Billing

  • What will the impact be on my utility bill?

    Starting this summer, most customers will see an estimated monthly rate increase of $3.40 depending on the level of service selected.

  • When can I see all cart and service options and how they will impact my monthly rate?

    From March 1 - March 31, you will be able to view cart and service options, estimated monthly rate, then select the option that will best suit your needs.

  • What can I compost?

    • Leaves and branches
    • Grass clippings
    • Fruits and vegetables
    • Yard and garden cleanup

    • Tea bags
    • Eggshells
    • Pine cones and needles
  • Will finished compost be available to customers?

    Finished compost will be available at no additional cost to participating customers.  Pickup locations and details will be released this summer.  The remaining compost may be used at city-owned facilities (e.g. parks, golf courses) or wholesaled, with revenue rolled back into the program.

  • Where is the compost produced?

    The compost will be locally produced at the composting facility on the City of Boise's Twenty Mile South Farm.
