Ongoing Programs
As part of Boise City's plan to reduce mercury emissions in our
community, the Boise Public Works Department is promoting an
existing national program that assists HVAC contractors and
wholesalers in collecting old mercury thermostats when they replace
home and commercial heating and air conditioning systems. Through
the Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), an
industry-based non-profit organization, HVAC contractors and
wholesalers have a convenient, easy way to recycle
mercury-containing thermostats.
To encourage participation, Boise Public Works Department will
pay the one-time TRC program registration fee ($25) for any
qualified HVAC contractor based in Boise, Garden City, or Eagle. To
qualify for this program, contractors must have at least seven
service technicians. Check out their video to see how easy it is to
register and participate in this industry-sponsored program.
Do It Yourselfers can recycle old mercury thermostats at any household
hazardous waste collection site or any participating HVAC
contractor. Please note: Participating HVAC contractors can only
accept intact thermostats. Do not remove the mercury
ampoules.
