Waste Reduction

  • Wrap gifts in recycled or reused wrapping paper or funny papers. Also remember to save and reuse wrapping paper, ribbons and bows.
  •  Give gifts that don't require much packaging, such as concert tickets or gift certificates.
  • Send electronic greeting cards/party invitations or recycled content greeting cards to reduce paper waste during the holidays or for parties anytime of the year.
  • Create-your-own-decorations!  Invite family and friends to create ornaments, greeting cards, garlands made from popcorn or cranberries, etc. Turn old light bulbs into ornaments or baby food jars into votives (candle holders).
  • Fill your dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer to capacity before running it. You will run fewer cycles, which saves energy.
  • Reduce your energy consumption and switch to LED Christmas lights for your tree and home.
  • Buy rechargeable batteries to accompany your electronic gifts, and consider giving a battery charger as well. Rechargeable batteries reduce the amount of potentially harmful materials thrown away, and can save money in the long run. About 40 percent of all battery sales occur during the holiday season.
  • Consider the durability of a product before you buy it. Cheaper, less durable items often wear out quickly, creating waste and costing you money.
